The Royal Enfield Continental GT 650 is a modern classic motorcycle that exudes a retro appeal while offering contemporary performance. Launched as part of Royal Enfield’s 650 Twin series in 2018, it quickly became a favourite among motorcycle enthusiasts for its blend of vintage aesthetics and modern engineering.
The Continental GT 650 is inspired by the café racer culture of the 1960s, known for its minimalist design and focus on speed. The motorcycle features a sculpted fuel tank, a sleek single-seat setup (with an optional dual seat), and low-set clip-on handlebars that give it an aggressive stance. The round headlamp, twin-pod analogue instrument cluster, and chrome-finished exhausts add to its classic appeal. The overall design is a homage to the original Continental GT, with updates that cater to the preferences of today’s riders.
The Continental GT 650 is built on a twin downtube cradle frame, which is shared with its sibling, the Interceptor 650. The chassis is designed by Harris Performance, a renowned British engineering firm, ensuring excellent handling dynamics. The motorcycle is equipped with 41mm telescopic forks at the front and twin coil-over shock absorbers at the rear, providing a balanced ride. The suspension setup is tuned for sporty handling, making the GT 650 agile in corners while maintaining comfort on longer rides.
For braking, the Continental GT 650 is fitted with a 320mm disc at the front and a 240mm disc at the rear, both from ByBre, a subsidiary of Brembo. Dual-channel ABS comes as standard, ensuring safe stopping power under various conditions. The motorcycle rides on 18-inch spoke wheels, shod with Pirelli Phantom SportComp tyres, which offer excellent grip and stability on different road surfaces.
The riding position of the GT 650 is slightly more committed compared to its sibling, the Interceptor 650, due to its lower handlebars and rear-set footpegs. This setup enhances the café racer feel but may require some getting used to for longer rides. However, the seat is well-padded, and the suspension does a commendable job of absorbing road imperfections, ensuring that comfort isn’t entirely sacrificed for style.
